The Saker Falcon (Falco cherrug) is a top predator of open landscapes, playing a key role in controlling populations of rodents and medium-sized birds. Its presence indicates healthy grasslands, balanced prey communities, and intact ecological processes. Historically widespread across Eastern Europe, the species has suffered dramatic declines due to habitat loss, power line electrocution, nest disturbances, illegal capture, and decreasing prey availability. Climate change and agricultural intensification further threaten its last remaining territories.
Conserving the Saker Falcon means protecting some of Romania’s most valuable natural habitats and maintaining the ecological balance that this apex predator helps uphold. Strengthening its populations supports biodiversity resilience and protects a species deeply embedded in Europe’s natural heritage..
